What is a payout?
A payout is a payment a business sends to a person or company that earned money through it: a creator, artist, freelancer or partner.
Definition
A payout is money that flows out of a business to the people who earned it. Agencies pay creators for campaigns, brands pay UGC creators for content, labels pay royalties to artists and platforms pay their users.
Payouts are different from customer payments. With a customer payment, the business receives money. With a payout, the business sends it, often to hundreds of people in many countries at once.
What a payout includes
- An amount and a currency
- A payee with confirmed contact and payment details
- A payment method, for example bank transfer, PayPal, Venmo or stablecoin
- An invoice or credit note that documents the payment for tax purposes1
- A status that both sides can follow until the money arrives
Mass payouts
A mass payout, also called a bulk payout, sends many payments in one batch.2 You import the list from a spreadsheet, CSV file or automation tool, approve it once and every payee is paid in their own method and currency.
Mass payouts are the normal case in the creator economy: a campaign with 200 creators, a monthly royalty run or a weekly payout to platform users. A good mass payout tool shows the status of every single payment in the batch, so one failed transfer does not hold up the rest.
Why payouts get complex
One payout is simple. A thousand payouts across 40 countries bring currency conversion, tax forms, identity checks, failed transfers and invoices you must collect and book. That operational load is why many companies use a payout platform instead of manual bank transfers.
