Payouts glossary
Plain-language definitions of payout, tax, compliance, stablecoin, creator economy and music industry terms, with official sources.
Payout basics
How money moves from your business to creators, artists, freelancers and partners.
What is a payout?
A payout is a payment a business sends to a person or company that earned money through it: a creator, artist, freelancer or partner.
Payout methods
A payout method is the rail that delivers money to the payee: bank transfer, digital wallet such as PayPal or Venmo, or stablecoin.
Cross-border payments
A cross-border payment is a payment where sender and payee are in different countries, which usually adds currency conversion, fees and compliance checks.
Settlement
Settlement is the moment money actually arrives and is final in the payee's account, as opposed to when the payment was sent.
Failed and returned payouts
A failed payout is rejected before it reaches the payee. A returned payout reaches the receiving bank or wallet and is sent back.
Tax & invoicing
VAT, invoice and platform reporting rules that apply when you pay people.
VAT reverse charge
Under the reverse charge, the business customer accounts for VAT on a cross-border B2B service instead of the supplier.
Self-billing
Self-billing means the buyer creates the invoice on behalf of the supplier, so creators do not have to write an invoice themselves.
DAC7 (EU platform reporting)
DAC7 makes digital platforms report what their sellers earn to EU tax authorities, including platforms outside the EU with EU-resident sellers.
Merchant of Record
Who is legally responsible for a payment, and why it changes your compliance workload.
What is a Merchant of Record?
A Merchant of Record (MoR) is the legal entity that is the counterparty to a transaction and generally carries the tax, invoicing and compliance obligations for it.
Merchant of Record vs. payment provider
A payment provider moves money on your behalf. A Merchant of Record also becomes the legal counterparty and takes on the obligations around the payment.
Liability in creator payouts
When a creator payout breaks tax or compliance rules, the business that paid can be held responsible. A Merchant of Record can take on much of that liability, within the limits of its contract and the law.
Compliance & KYC
Identity checks, anti-money-laundering rules and data protection for payee data.
KYC and KYB
KYC (Know Your Customer) verifies a person's identity. KYB (Know Your Business) verifies a company, its owners and the people who act for it.
AML (Anti-Money Laundering)
AML rules require financial companies, and some other businesses, to prevent, detect and report money laundering and terrorist financing.
Data protection (GDPR)
Payout data contains personal data such as names, addresses, IDs and bank details, so privacy laws like the GDPR usually apply.
Stablecoins & digital assets
Digital dollars and euros, currency conversion, wallets and the rules around them.
What are stablecoins?
Stablecoins are digital tokens designed to keep a stable value, usually 1:1 with a currency like the US dollar or the euro, most often backed by reserves.
Currency conversion (FX)
FX conversion changes money from one currency to another. The rate and the spread you get decide how much the payee receives.
Crypto wallets
A crypto wallet holds the keys that control stablecoins. Wallets are either self-custodial or custodial.
On-ramp and off-ramp
An on-ramp converts bank money into stablecoins. An off-ramp converts stablecoins back into money in a bank account.
Creator economy
The businesses, programs and money flows behind creators.
Creator economy
The creator economy is the market of independent creators who earn from content, and the agencies, brands, platforms and tools that pay them.
Influencer marketing
Influencer marketing is when brands pay creators to promote products to their own audience on social media.
What is UGC marketing?
UGC marketing uses content from creators or customers that brands publish on their own channels and ads. UGC creators are usually paid for content, not audience.
Creator agencies and MCNs
Creator agencies manage talent and campaigns for creators. Multi-channel networks (MCNs) work with many channels, usually for a share of their revenue.
Affiliate payouts
Affiliate payouts are commissions paid to partners who bring sales or sign-ups through their link or code.
Music industry
Royalties, rights, distribution and how labels pay artists and collaborators.
Music royalties
Music royalties are payments to the owners of a song or recording each time it is streamed, sold, performed or used in media.
Royalty splits and statements
Royalty splits define who gets which share of a track's income. Royalty statements show each person what was earned and paid in a period.
Recoupment and artist advances
An advance is money a label pays an artist before royalties are earned. Recoupment is the process of earning that money back from the artist's royalties.
Music distribution
A music distributor delivers releases to streaming services and stores, and collects the master royalties they pay.
Publishing and collecting societies
Music publishers manage and license compositions. Collecting societies, such as PROs, collect royalties for songwriters and publishers.
ISRC and ISWC codes
ISRC codes identify sound recordings and ISWC codes identify compositions. They help make sure royalties reach the right rights holders.
YouTube & Content ID
How YouTube identifies rights, pays creators and rights holders, and what happens with claims.
What is YouTube Content ID?
Content ID is YouTube's system that automatically finds videos using copyrighted audio or video and lets rights owners block, track or earn money from them.
Content ID claims and disputes
A Content ID claim applies a rights owner's policy to a video. The uploader can dispute a claim if they have the rights or a valid exception.
Copyright strikes and takedowns
A copyright strike follows a valid legal takedown request and removes a video. Unlike a Content ID claim, strikes can restrict or close a whole channel.
YouTube royalties
YouTube royalties are the payments YouTube makes to creators and music rights holders from ads and YouTube Premium subscriptions.
YouTube Partner Program and AdSense
The YouTube Partner Program lets creators earn from their channel. Earnings are paid through Google AdSense.
